The integration of Gen-AI in education is now accepted, particularly in UK universities, moving past debates of technological readiness highlighted during the pandemic. This discussion doesn’t argue for or against AI, but pragmatically addresses faculty concerns about it replacing intellectual work, and student fears of being accused of using it. Emphasizing critical literacies in curricula is vital in a digital society. Inspired by Freire, we propose critical AI literacy involves understanding technology’s role in education and society. We’ll explore how educators can guide students in using AI tools like ChatGPT critically in assessments and feedback, ensuring teaching remains an engaged practice and education continues to support a democratic society.
